The best 2 months of my life - really!

I realised the other night, when someone asked me if I was enjoying my break, that the last 2 months have literally been the best 2 month period in my life to date.
I realised the other night, when someone asked me if I was enjoying my break, that the last 2 months have literally been the best 2 month period in my life to date.

As is often the case I didn't realise it while it was happening. I've been enjoying it, but it's only looking back on it that I realise how deeply satisfying it's been. I haven't done many of the things I planned to do. But equally I haven't wasted the time either. I've chosen to do things that feel right and really matter to me.

Spending time with my family. Not blocks of time as I'd imagined, but little everyday nuggets of time. Like dropping them at school a couple of times a week, or going along to see our oldest have his swimming lesson. Spending a morning here and there with my wife while the children are at school. I'd never have dreamed of planning these things but they've allowed me to share my families life more than I ever have before. I've been a part of it rather than an observer with an occasional walk-on part.

From a work perspective I've tackled the chunk of work I wanted to - ie getting to grips with how to develop DNN modules. But I've taken much longer over it than I'd planned to. Again this has proven to be a good thing. I could probably have codgled together the website I need to with a peripheral understanding of DNN. Instead, I've learning it steadily over a period of weeks, working through lots of examples and learning about ASP.NET 2.0 as I went. This process has been enjoyable in its own right, and has helped me rediscover the fire for programming that I think I'd been losing over the last few years.

And then there's the stuff I didn't know was going to happen. Helping a family member looking into buying a business was incredibly interesting. And satisfying when I found many of my suggestions reinforced by his professional bankers and accountants. Then going through his existing business with him has made the reality of working for oneself seem even more plausible now.

The few weeks look to be exciting too. I get to put my newly acquired knowledge into practice, building a custom made website in DotNetNuke. Learning is great fun, but putting what I've learnt to practical use is alway more satisfying. Then there's the Christmas visits to family and friends. I'm looking forward to them more this year than ever before. Usually I end up resenting spending the precious few days off driving around the country. This time I've already had a great break and so am left looking forward to spending time with the people I care about.

So I've got about a month left before rejoining the legions of London workers. My commuting batteries have been recharged, and ready to dive head-long into "the city". Until then - it's time to start crafting a website. More on that later...
